MAQUINA. Lisbon psychedelic techno punk band press photo

MAQUINA.

Lisbon trio MAQUINA. sit at the intersection of krautrock repetition, industrial techno pulse and EBM-driven intensity. Built around a stripped-back guitar, bass and drums formation, the band create a sound that feels both organic and mechanical — hypnotic, relentless and physically charged.

Known for the explosive energy of their live shows, MAQUINA. have quickly developed a reputation across Portugal and Europe as one of the most exciting acts emerging from the underground scene. Their music blurs the boundaries between rock and club culture, combining the hypnotic drive of krautrock with the raw immediacy of punk and the pulse of electronic dance music.

At the core of MAQUINA.’s sound is a powerful trio dynamic: machine-like drums and primal vocal outbursts from Halison, scuzzy floor-shaking bass riffs from Tomás, and piercing guitar noise and effects from João. The result is music that feels visceral and physical, designed as much for movement and atmosphere as for traditional song structures.

The band’s second album Prata, released in April 2024 via Fuzz Club, captures MAQUINA. at full intensity. Across six relentless tracks, the record channels pounding rhythms, hypnotic repetition and psychedelic textures into an adrenaline-fuelled listening experience equally suited to dark basement venues and late-night dance floors.

Recorded and co-produced by Carlos de Jesus (Sunflowers) at Arda Recorders, Prata grew largely from improvisation during sessions throughout 2023. The band push sounds together to create noise and push noise together to create sound, building immersive sonic landscapes driven by texture, tension and momentum.

Though their music often points toward club culture — following their aptly titled 2023 EP Dirty Tracks for Clubbing — MAQUINA.’s approach remains fiercely organic. With no synthesisers in sight, the trio rely instead on the raw interaction between drums, bass and guitar to generate their distinctive machine-like intensity.

MAQUINA. are part of a new wave of Portuguese underground artists reshaping the boundaries between psychedelic rock, punk and electronic music — visceral, uncompromising and built for movement.
